Our aim is to help educate the younger generation on where their food comes from and how it is produced. Our farm is open for the local schools to visit in June and July from when the day-old poults arrive. We have gained a 5 star Health and Hygiene Certificate from South Northamptonshire Council.
My grandchildren live in Dover and when then come to visit we always encourage them to get involved in all aspects of turkey rearing so they too can benefit from the farming lifestyle and hopefully carry it into the future.
It’s always been a family affair, with Susan and Mark's children Frankie, Freddie and Anya helping when they were at home in their teens, it is local people who help with plucking and preparing the turkeys at Christmas and all the turkeys are sold through the farm shop, with many customers returning each year.
They began producing turkeys at Moorgate Farm, Towcester, in 1999 alongside the calves and pigs they also reared then. We were disappointed at the quality of the turkeys we bought ourselves for Christmas - so we decided to produce our own.
They aimed high and became associated with the KellyBronze Farmer scheme just as the KellyBronze Turkey was gaining a reputation as the premier traditional turkey for Christmas. We decided that if we were going to give turkeys a go, we would do it with the best quality birds, says Susan. KellyBronze are very distinctive with their bronze feathers, for centuries the bronze turkey was the traditional British bird and it was the Kelly family who really spearheaded their revival.
There is also opportunity to taste the special KellyBronze flavour at two special tasting Sundays that the Gorst family hold at the farm in November. Many of those who come reckon that is the start of Christmas for them, says Susan. She also has stands at local food events, and supports the KellyBronze exhibit at the BBC Good Food Show at the NEC, Birmingham.
