In 1999 my husband and I had been rearing calves for 4 years; one Christmas my husband decided he was not happy with the turkey I was buying for our Christmas dinner and believed we could provide something better for ourselves and friends alike! We approached KellyBronze to ask if we could become one of their farmers.
5 years later in 2004, my husband was diagnosed with Huntington's disease. The shock hit us hard and I had had the experience of coping with my father-in-law and knew what a difficult road lay ahead, all I can say is thank goodness I had the turkeys!
Huntington's is a disease caused by a faulty gene; a gene is a piece of hereditary information which is present in every cell of the body and tells cells what to do and when to do it. Huntington’s disease is passed down through families with each child of a parent with Huntington's having a 50% chance of inheriting it. It changes the whole person - body, mind and behaviour. There are around 8,000 people in the UK with Huntington's and around 32,000 at risk of developing it.
Once the symptoms of Huntington’s disease begin, it will gradually progress; there is no cure for Huntington’s disease. Living with Huntington’s disease means having to be open to making changes to your lives, learning to take one day at a time. Living with Huntington's disease can be very challenging for all members of the family; whether other members have been diagnosed with Huntington’s or not it is still a big part of family life. At least now because of the tremendous research, the Huntington’s Association is doing our children have a chance to make educational choices for their future.
